Outdoor Lighting Corrosion Protection: ISO 12944 Ratings Explained (C3-C5)

Last updated: 01 October 2026

Why is corrosion protection important for outdoor lights?

Outdoor lights are continually exposed to humidity, pollution, salt spray, and temperature changes, all of which accelerate corrosion. Proper corrosion protection ensures safety, maintains performance, and reduces ongoing maintenance costs

Which standards define corrosion categories for outdoor lighting?

Corrosion categories for lighting are defined by ISO 12944 and ISO 9223. These standards classify atmospheric corrosivity and outline appropriate protective measures.

What are the benefits of using corrosion-protected luminaires?

  • Longer service life

  • Reduced maintenance and replacement costs

  • Improved safety and compliance

  • Consistent lighting performance and appearance

How are C3, C4 and C5 corrosion ratings tested?

While ISO 9223 and ISO 12944 classify the corrosivity of an environment, the corrosion resistance of a luminaire is typically verified through accelerated laboratory testing. These tests simulate years of outdoor exposure in a controlled environment to evaluate the durability of coatings, housings, brackets, fasteners, and other metallic components.

Salt Spray Testing (ISO 9227)

One of the most common corrosion tests for outdoor lighting is the Neutral Salt Spray (NSS) test in accordance with ISO 9227. During testing, samples are exposed to a fine salt mist inside a corrosion chamber for hundreds or even thousands of hours. The luminaire is then inspected for:

  • Red rust formation

  • Coating blistering or peeling

  • Corrosion creep from scratches or edges

  • Structural degradation of metal components

Typical test durations associated with corrosion categories are:

Corrosion Category

ISO 9227 Salt Spray Test

C3

480 hours

C4

720 hours

C5

1,440 hours

These accelerated tests help demonstrate that the protective coating system can withstand harsh outdoor environments over an extended service life.

Humidity & Condensation Testing (ISO 6270-1)

Outdoor luminaires are also subjected to cyclic humidity testing under ISO 6270-1. Test samples are exposed to warm, high-humidity conditions that simulate years of condensation, dew formation, and moisture ingress.

Typical exposure durations include:

Corrosion Category

ISO 6270-1 Condensation Test

C3

240 hours

C4

480 hours

C5

720 hours

This testing evaluates how well coating systems resist moisture penetration and protects against corrosion developing beneath the surface finish. After the test, the samples are inspected for rusting, cracking, flaking, blistering, corrosion around scratches or exposed edges.

How is the Zorro 2 Streetlight protected from corrosion?

The Zorro 2 Streetlight is rated C4 and protected with a two-stage coating system:

  • Electrophoretic coating: for a uniform, moisture-resistant base layer

  • Powder coating: for a durable cured finish
